MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) -- Nazir Ahmed appears calm and unrepentant as he recounts how he slit the throats of his three young daughters and their 25-year old stepsister to salvage his family's "honor" -- a crime that shocked Pakistan.

By killing those that might sin, he showed himself an honorable man. This makes sense, somewhere, maybe, to some species, or...no. To say this shocks Pakistan, says much in itself.

The 40-year old laborer, speaking to The Associated Press in police detention as he was being shifted to prison, confessed to just one regret -- that he didn't murder the stepsister's alleged lover, too.

And his parents! And his grandparents! And Allah! If he wouldn't have created penises and vaginas maybe this would have never happened! How did your children come about Nazir?

Hundreds of girls and women are murdered by male relatives each year in this conservative Islamic nation, and rights groups said Wednesday such "honor killings" will only stop when authorities get serious about punishing perpetrators. The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said that in more than half of such cases that make it to court, most end with cash settlements paid by relatives to the victims' families, although under a law passed last year, the minimum penalty is 10 years, the maximum death by hanging.

Which is never seen. The males are almost never punished. It is such a manly thing to go after just the women and little girls.

Ahmed's apparent actions -- witnessed by his wife, Rehmat Bibi, as she cradled their 3-month-old son -- happened Friday night at their home in the cotton-growing village of Gago Mandi in eastern Punjab province. It is the latest of more than 260 such honor killings documented by the rights commission, mostly from media reports, during the first 11 months of 2005.

Bibi recounted how she was awakened by a shriek as Ahmed put his hand to the mouth of his stepdaughter, Muqadas, and cut her throat with a machete. She said she looked on helplessly from the corner of the room as he then killed the three girls -- Bano, 8, Sumaira, 7, and Humaira, 4 -- pausing between the slayings to brandish the bloodstained knife at his wife, warning her not to intervene or raise alarm. "I was shivering with fear. I did not know how to save my daughters," Bibi, sobbing, told AP by phone from the village. "I begged my husband to spare my daughters but he said, 'If you make a noise, I will kill you."

And he would believe it was honorable, along with his Imam.

"The whole night the bodies of my daughters lay in front of me," she said.

The next morning, Ahmed was arrested.

Speaking to AP from the back of a police pickup truck late Tuesday as he was moved to a prison in the city of Multan, Ahmed showed no contrition. Appearing disheveled but composed, he said he killed Muqadas because she had committed adultery, and his daughters because he didn't want them to do the same when they grew up.

He said he bought a butcher knife and a machete after midday prayers on Friday and hid them in the house where he carried out the killings. "I thought the younger girls would do what their eldest sister had done, so they should be eliminated," he said, his hands cuffed, his face unshaven. "We are poor people and we have nothing else to protect but our honor."

Despite Ahmed's contention that Muqadas had committed adultery -- a claim made by her husband -- the rights commission reported that according to local people, Muqadas had fled her husband because he had abused her and forced her to work in a brick-making factory. Police have said they do not know the identity or whereabouts of Muqadas' alleged lover.

Muqadas was Bibi's daughter by her first marriage to Ahmed's brother, who died 14 years ago. Ahmed married his brother's widow, as is customary under Islamic tradition. "Women are treated as property and those committing crimes against them do not get punished," said the rights commission's director, Kamla Hyat. "The steps taken by our government have made no real difference."

"It's a different culture." This phrase can be used over and over again when you have politics on the line.

Activists accuse President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, a self-styled moderate Muslim, of reluctance to reform outdated Islamized laws that make it difficult to secure convictions in rape, acid attacks and other cases of violence against women. They say police are often reluctant to prosecute, regarding such crimes as family disputes. Statistics on honor killings are confused and imprecise, but figures from the rights commission's Web site and its officials show a marked reduction in cases this year: 267 in the first 11 months of 2005, compared with 579 during all of 2004. The Ministry of Women's Development said it had no reliable figures.

Let's hope the downward trend continues.

Ijaz Elahi, the ministry's joint secretary, said the violence was decreasing and that increasing numbers of victims were reporting incidents to police or the media. Laws, including one passed last year to beef up penalties for honor killings, had been toughened, she said. Police in Multan said they would complete their investigation into Ahmed's case in the next two weeks and that he faces the death sentence if he is convicted for the killings and terrorizing his neighborhood. Ahmed, who did not resist arrest, was unrepentant.

All good things must come to an end, and they did this day on the last Monday Night Football broadcast on ABC that started 35 years ago. Like the first game, the New York Jets were the recipients of a 31-21 loss. The first time was to the Cleveland Browns, this time they lost to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. I wanted to take this post to reflect on my favorite Monday Night Football memories. I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan, and have big memories of most of their Monday Night Games, but I want to look for those greatest monday night moments as far as the NFL in general is concerned:

January 3rd, 1983. I watch as the Minnesota Vikings pin the Cowboys deep in their own territory. White hands off to "Touch Down" Tony Dorsett, and the man simply skimpers to a 99 yard touchdown run. It wasn't the greatest running play I've ever seen, as Tony was untouchable once he had that open lane, but it is a record that will never be beaten. Did you know know that Tony Dorsett holds 5 of the Cowboys 6 longest rushes in Cowboys history? Emmitt is the Cowboys greatest, but Dorsett was probably the most electrifying back they ever had. He did not have Emmitt's grit though.

December 8th, 1980. I am stunned to hear the news that John Lennon is assassinated during an otherwise boring game between the Patriots and Dolphins. Who cares about Griese and that defensive star, what's his name on the Dolphins? The true star I wanted to see that night was Hannah of the Patriots, and he was like...blocking people. Learning about John's death turned my world upside down for several days, and made an otherwise unmemorable game one of the events that will live with me to the day I die. A true warrior in the way of peace, John will always be missed.

November 18th, 1985. The Washington Redskins face off against the New York Giants. I watch as I see two teams I can not stand face off against each other. I'm hoping for a Giants win. Why? I don't rmember at this time. I see Taylor, Carson, and that deadly crew they had swarm Theisman. I remember seeing Taylor in a frantic mode signal the Redskins medics to the field. Just for fun, the MNF crew shows us Theismans leg snap over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. In slow-mo, in full speed. It's there at all angles baby, just ready to see. Joe Theisman then starts to his career path where he is today. Boring us on Sunday nights explaining how the QB in any particular game was the entire difference in how the game was decided.

I want to see his leg snap again.

December 2nd, 1985. The Chicago Bears see the only loss in what is the greatest season I have ever witnessed by any team ever. Keep in mind I'm 36, and only got serious into the NFL during the 79 season when Pittsburgh beat Los Angeles. The goddamn Rams beat my Cowboys in the play-offs that year, but that's okay. We'll take our 5 Lombardis over their 1 over the decades. Well, as I remember it, Miami was killing the Bears and asshat Buddy Ryan's vaunted defense. McMahaon didn't start that game, but came off the bench and threw three touchdowns(If I remember right), to make a game out of it. It was too late though. If the Bears had started him, I have no doubt that the Bears would've had a perfect season that year, and we would now be able to go without hearing Mercury Morris ever again on how NFL history stacks up. Reality is, they didn't, the Bears Lost, but they were probably the most brutal team I've seen assembled over the last 25 years.

November 11th, 2000. The "Monday Night Miracle" features the New York Jets(Who play so big a part in monday night history) against the Miami Dolphins. Down 30-7 in the fourth quarter, Vinny Testaverde, the only quarter back left from the helmetless football era, leads the Jets to an unbelievable come from behind victory that only parallels the Buffalo Bills comeback against the Houston Oilers in the early 90's play off all time classic. Neither team would go on to a Superbowl, but oh what a game!

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa -- A suspected mugger being chased by security guards met a grisly end after he fled into a zoo and climbed into the tiger enclosure. His mauled body was discovered Sunday by a visitor to the zoo in this central Southern African city, prompting initial confusion as to how the man ended up in the enclosure.

I always choose the penguin enclosure myself.

Police said Wednesday the man and an accomplice had robbed a couple at knifepoint early Sunday. Security guards gave chase and one of the suspects jumped over the perimeter fence. He then apparently ran to the tiger's den in the middle of the zoo.
"What exactly happened we don't know and we won't ever know because the only person who could tell us is dead," police spokeswoman Else Gerber said.

I imagine the tiger would just say "Thhhhheeeeeeeyre Greeeeeaaaaat!"

She said there was an empty can of beer near the corpse and that the autopsy would reveal whether the man was intoxicated at the time.

So at least he was a little numb.

Zoo officials have said the Bengal tigers will not be destroyed because they were blameless. The tigers had been fed on Saturday and so did not eat the man because they were not hungry, according to media reports.

Two Central Florida men were arrested Monday on suspicion they stole horns from a train and attempted to hook them up to a truck, Local 6 News reported. Eustis police said Richard Etienne and Mark Wortsman were charged with grand theft in connection with the stolen train horns at Inland Lake Railway in Eustis.

Becuase no one would've noticed the big ass horn on their truck isn't sold at Autozone.

Earlier this month, an official at the railway noticed a horn was missing during inspection of a train. Since all equipment must be working for the train to be allowed to travel on the tracks, a crane was called to move the locomotive and put it out of commission until it could be repaired. Other horns were also reported missing.

Eustis police received a tip that the horns were with Wortsman and Etienne after a tip was reported that the pair were allegedly showing off the five orange horns and trying to get them to work.

I'm amazed they didn't injure themselves in doing so.

During questioning, Etienne confessed to police that they stole the horns. The horns cost more than $2,000 to replace.

I see the Bush administration is now starting to take on its critics, and that is going to make a huge difference in the long run versus their "stay hush" strategy they've been using. It has only lead to mis-trust thus far, and the Bush administration has finally picked up on that. But that is off topic, so go on...

In a crucial vote Friday morning as Congress raced toward adjournment, the bill's Senate supporters were not able to garner the 60 votes necessary to overcome a threatened filibuster by Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and their allies. The final vote was 52-47

Bush, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and GOP congressional leaders had lobbied fiercely to make most of the expiring Patriot Act provisions permanent, and add new safeguards and expiration dates to the two most controversial parts: roving wiretaps and secret warrants for books, records and other items from businesses, hospitals and organizations such as libraries.

Becuase the most logical solutions to a temporary problem are to void and null permanently, freedoms that we have taken for granted.

Making most of the act's provisions permanent was a priority for both the Bush administration and Republican leaders on Capitol Hill before Congress adjourns for the year. The House on Wednesday passed a House-Senate compromise bill to renew the Act that supporters say added significant safeguards to the law. The failure to renew the provisions would be "interpreted by our enemies as somehow inviting or even enabling further terrorist attacks on U.S. soil," Sen. Orrin Hatch (news, bio, voting record), R-Utah, said.

Or it could say that we are not going to change our principals in the face of your vile threats.

But the law's critics, such as Sens. Feingold and Craig, say they don't want the Patriot Act to expire — they just want enough time to improve the bill to the point where it doesn't infringe on American liberties. That idea was rejected by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R.-Tenn., and by the White House. "In the war on terror, we cannot afford to be without these vital tools for a single moment," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said earlier today before the Senate vote.

You can always do it the old way, and get a judges approval to tap those that you suspect of wrong doing. If you have the evidence, it shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure you could make leniencys for special circumstances where danger to the public is at hand, without having full evidence, but good reason for suspicion. The way it is now though, the government can tap and spy on anyone they please, at any time. So what is the problem with doing it the old way with some new provisions?

Congress passed the Patriot Act overwhelmingly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The law expanded the government's surveillance and prosecutorial powers against suspected terrorists, their associates and financiers.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but the terrorists won when that happened.

The bill's opponents say the original act was rushed into law, and Congress should take more time now to make sure the rights of innocent Americans are safeguarded before making most of the expiring provisions permanent. They says the current Patriot Act gives government too much power to investigate people's private lives.

9/11/2001 was a horrible day. The images of those towers coming down, and the people jumping out of those buildings brings my blood to an absolute boil everytime I see footage of that despicable day. Almost 3,000 lives were lost, and sometimes I think the horror of that day truely is forgotten.That's a sin in itself, and it shouldn't be forgotten why we are in this war on terror that we are in now. But it's also not unpatriotic to question why we are doing the actions we are doing to fight that threat to our way of life.

What gets lost in the "Patriotic" feeling towards supporting the Patriot Act is this, and may you really think about this one. Yes, the reason that 3,000 people that died that day was in fact partly due to our freedoms that we enjoy in this country. They had freedom to move about without overly intrusive Big Brother watching their every move. They had freedom to have private conversations that they didn't have to worry about being tapped at random. They didn't have to worry about being classified as a threat due to their religion or racial background. Yes, they took advantage of this, and yes, they wounded us deeply. But how did this come about?

The Revolutionary War: 25,324 die to insure we are given our God given rights, including the right to be protected against unreasonable search and siezure.

The War of 1812: 2,260 die to make sure the British don't take away the rights established during the Revolutionary War.

The Confederate War:

The Union and its ideals are preserved. Blacks are freed. In Antietam 5,000 American lives are lost in a single day. Nearly double the lives lost on 9/11.

World War I: 116,516 lives lost defending our ideals, and making sure the Europeans have freedom in the future. Liberty wins against totalatarionism.

World War II: 405,399 die to preserve our way of life, and make sure the Nazis don't see to their goal of a third world reich. To get a clue, you might not like the way they did things in Poland, why grant any government those kind of priveleges?

Korea: 54,246 die to make sure the people of South Korea have their proper freedom. So we accept these deaths in the name of spreading our ideals abroad, what happens when we get hit with 3,000 casualties?

Vietnam War: 56,244 sacrafice their lives, and their mates get called out before the job is finished. Millions more die shortly afterwards in the final cleansing of the region of the capitalists. Is Iraq headed this way? Probably not, but back to the original point.

Millions sacraficed their lives to insure that we have the freedoms we do. 3,000 died on 9/11. I feel pretty confident that many of those that died that day would not have wanted to see our liberties stripped away in the name of security. What was paid for in blood by millions should not be given up because of the death of 3,000. Another scared society giving in to big brother, and whistfully waving away our rights so many died for, in the name of feeling a little safer. Doing this, we deserve neither security nor freedom. This has to be one of the sickest stories I've come across in a while:

IASI, Romania (Reuters) - Romanian prosecutors launched an investigation on Thursday after a shepherd found dozens of human fetuses, some in plastic bags, in a forest in the northeast of the Balkan country.

Sick.

"I saw five or six dead babies spread on the ground," Gabriel Avadanii, the 24-year-old shepherd who discovered them, told reporters in the nearby town of Iasi. "There were others in a blue bag but I didn't count them."

The authorities believe the 80 fetuses, between three and nine weeks old and preserved some 10 to 20 years ago, may have come from two medical research institutes at the University of Medicine in Iasi and been stored for students' experiments.

The least they could do was give them a proper burial. Instead their tossed into the forest like a bunch of trash.

"I have been a criminal investigator for years, I've seen many dead bodies in my life, but I have never seen something as gruesome as this," said Vasilii Pretula, the prosecutor coordinating the investigation.

Workers at one of the research institutes may have accidentally broken containers holding the preserved fetuses and tried to cover up their mistake by dumping them in the forest, the health ministry said in a statement.
